5 Bathroom Renovation Mistakes Homeowners Often Regret

A bathroom renovation can add comfort, functionality, and value to your home—but some decisions are much harder and more expensive to change later.

Interior designers often see homeowners wishing they had planned certain features differently. If you’re thinking about remodeling your bathroom, here are five common mistakes worth avoiding.

1. Making the Shower Niche Too Small
Bathroom storage always seems to disappear faster than expected, especially in the shower.

A small shower niche may look clean and minimal, but it can quickly become crowded with shampoo, soap, skincare products, and other essentials. If you have the space, consider installing a larger niche or even two smaller ones.

Tip: Plan your storage around what you actually use every day, not just how the bathroom looks.

2. Choosing Trendy or Bold Tile
Bold tile can make a bathroom look impressive, but trends can change quickly.

Since replacing bathroom tile involves demolition, waterproofing, labor, and new materials, it can become an expensive project if you decide you no longer like the design.

For a bathroom that will hold up over time, consider using neutral or timeless tile and adding personality through paint, fixtures, mirrors, or accessories that are easier to change.

3. Removing the Bathtub Completely
A large walk-in shower may sound appealing, but removing every bathtub in the home could be something you regret later.

Families with young children often look for a tub, and having at least one bathtub can be a practical feature when it comes time to sell.

If you have enough space, consider keeping one tub and upgrading it with a clean, modern design.

4. Not Planning Enough Storage
Storage should be considered throughout the entire bathroom—not just under the sink.

Think about where you'll keep towels, toiletries, cleaning supplies, hair tools, and everyday essentials. Features such as recessed medicine cabinets, pull-out drawers, and built-in outlets can make the space much more functional.

A bathroom can look great, but if there’s nowhere to put your everyday items, it won't feel nearly as convenient.

5. Underestimating Bathroom Ventilation
Good ventilation is easy to overlook during a renovation, but it can make a big difference—especially in a warm and humid climate.

Without proper ventilation, moisture can linger after showers and contribute to mold, mildew, peeling paint, and other moisture-related problems. A quality exhaust fan can help remove excess humidity and keep the bathroom more comfortable.

When renovating, make sure the exhaust fan is properly sized for the space and vents outdoors rather than simply into an attic or enclosed area.

Tip: Good ventilation may not be the most noticeable upgrade, but it can help protect your bathroom and keep it looking better over time.
