The start of a new school year is an exciting time filled with fresh opportunities, new friendships, and daily routines. As classrooms fill up again, roads, sidewalks, and neighborhoods also become much busier.
Whether you're a student, parent, or driver, everyone plays a role in keeping the community safe during the school year. Here are a few simple reminders to help make the school season a safe and successful one.
Safety Tips for Students
Walk Safely
If you walk to school or the bus stop, always use sidewalks whenever possible. Cross the street only at designated crosswalks and look left, right, then left again before crossing.
Avoid looking at your phone or wearing headphones while crossing the street so you can stay aware of your surroundings.
Stay Visible
If you're walking early in the morning or later in the afternoon, wear bright or reflective clothing whenever possible so drivers can see you more easily.
Practice School Bus Safety
Arrive at the bus stop a few minutes early.
Stand a safe distance from the curb while waiting.
Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before boarding.
Never walk behind the bus. If you must cross the street, wait for the driver's signal and cross in front of the bus where you can be seen.
